Sporting Clays Etiquette: Do’s and Don’ts on the Course

Sporting clays is a social and dynamic sport, and good etiquette makes the experience safer and more enjoyable for everyone. At Jacksonville Clay Target Sports, safety isn't just a rule, it's part of the culture. From beginners to experienced shooters, following proper conduct ensures smooth rounds and a welcoming environment for all.

Do: Follow Firearm Safety Basics

Safety is the foundation of etiquette on the course. JCTS has clear safety rules that all shooters are expected to observe:

  • Always keep the action of your gun open except when you're on the shooting station and ready to shoot. If you place an over-and-under in a rack, you may close the action only for that moment and reopen it immediately as you lift it out.
  • Never load your gun until you're standing on the station ready to shoot. Before leaving the station, unload completely of live and fired shells.
  • Always point firearms in a safe direction, even when unloaded or with the action open. A safe direction is one where even an unintentional discharge won't injure others or damage property.

These basics are essential to keeping JCTS a safe place to enjoy sporting clays and other disciplines.

Don't: Ignore Range Rules

JCTS maintains a structured set of range safety rules for good reason. They protect you and those around you:

  • Don't rely on a safety catch to keep you safe; if a gun is closed and loaded, treat it as ready to fire.
  • Never use a shot size larger than #7-1/2, as larger shots can interfere with safe fall zones.
  • Don't mix ammunition gauges. Carrying different gauges can cause dangerous obstructions in the chamber.
  • Never shoot while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that could impair reflexes or judgment.

All members and visitors are encouraged to report any safety violations to clubhouse staff or a range officer on duty.

Do: Be Mindful and Courteous

Good etiquette goes beyond safety rules. On the course:

  • Keep a steady pace so groups behind you aren't held up.
  • Stay within marked shooting areas and respect station boundaries.
  • If a range officer or staff gives guidance, follow it promptly.
  • Help newcomers feel welcome; a friendly atmosphere makes the sport more enjoyable for everyone.

Don't: Disrupt the Flow

A few behaviors can slow down or negatively impact the experience for others:

  • Avoid lingering too long between shots or stations.
  • Don't handle your firearm off station in a way that distracts others.
  • Refrain from loud, sudden movements that may interrupt someone's focus.

By practicing good etiquette rooted in safety and respect, JCTS shooters contribute to a positive, inviting environment where both new and experienced shooters can grow, have fun, and enjoy the sport responsibly.
