At Jacksonville Clay Target Sports, we offer multiple disciplines of clay shooting, including trap, skeet, and sporting clays. If you’re new to the sport or looking to try something different, it helps to understand the key differences between these styles. Each offers a unique challenge—and all are available right here at JCTS.
Trap Shooting
In trap, targets are launched away from the shooter from a single machine (called a trap house) located in front of the shooting stations. The targets vary in angle and speed, simulating the flight path of upland birds. It’s a great introduction to clay sports, with a rhythm that rewards consistency and focus.
Skeet Shooting
Skeet uses two trap houses—one high and one low—that launch targets across the field in crossing patterns. Shooters move through stations, challenging them to track clays from multiple angles. The timing and precision needed for skeet can be more demanding, but it’s a fast-paced and rewarding style once you get the hang of it.
Sporting Clays
Often described as “golf with a shotgun,” sporting clays take place on a course with stations set in natural terrain. Each station presents a unique challenge with targets flying in different directions, heights, and speeds. JCTS is proud to provide two state-of-the-art, 15-station sporting clay courses designed by internationally renowned sporting clay architects and designers, Heyward Cunningham and Rick Hemingway. The two courses, North and South, offer different layouts and shooting experiences, allowing shooters to enjoy a diverse range of challenges.
